The Portland Football Club recorded their first wins of the season last week.

On Thursday the U13 boys took Belleville by surprise and that same day the U11 boys had the upper hand over Kingston United.

“Finally the season started and now we have two wins in our first week,” said Anders Carson of PFC. “That is more than all of last season. We are continuing to build this club,” Carson said.

The U13 boys fell behind early in the game but it quickly levelled at one apiece when Belleville was awarded a penalty kick. The kick was stopped and soon after PFC settled in. The game ended in a 4-1 victory for PFC with goals by Michael Truelove, Nathan Rodgers, Kurtis Day and Broden Hawkins. “Keep an eye on this team,” said Carson about the U13 boys who are coached by Craig Lapierre.

The U11 boys were in Kingston and beat their opponent 2-1.

“Kingston United came at us very strong, but our defensive players Dain Olesen, Gabe Leggett, Brian French, Kody Woods and Jeffrey Ray challenged with attitude” said U11 coach Shawn Merriman. Merriman is assisted by trainer Kate Wing and assistant coach and manager Cheryl-Ann Merriman. PFC striker Braiden Wing had a strong shot at net, and Dylan Carbino picked up the rebound to score. Portland goalie Reid Caron had an excellent game but Kingston United scored on a penalty kick to tie the game.

Then, it was Michael Anson who sent a pass to Braiden Wing and Wing quickly drilled the ball past the Kingston keeper for the winning goal.“This will definitely be a real confidence builder. The boys worked extremely hard and it was nice to see them start the season with a win,” said Merriman.

Merriman is hoping a large crowd will come out, armed with lawn chairs, bells and whistles to cheer on their team at the home game at Kin Park on Harlem Road this Thursday, May 29 at 7 p.m.
