During Monday evening's practice at Kin Park, members of the Portland Football Club (PFC) were looking ahead to this week's game against Brockville.

There was not too much talk about last weeks trip to Quinte West as the boys were trying to forget about the 9-0 loss they encountered on the road.

On Tuesday last week PFC got out-played and out-scored by the experienced soccer squad of Quinte West. Where other clubs might have taken their foot off the peddle, QuinteWest never slowed down.

After 90 minutes PFC left the field down by nine, the score at half time was 3-0.

"Our goalie [Christian Bresee] kept us in the game. I don't know how many shots they had against him," said PFC head coach Anders Carson. "The score could have been a lot higher."

Quinte West has a well established soccer tradition. Several teams in their program manage to stay together for many years. The players PFC faced last week played in a tournament in Florida around Christmas time and many play indoor soccer throughout the winter.

Later this year, July 20, Quinte West will come to Portland. Carson thinks he might play a less opportunistic game that time around.

"We will do our best and try with more defenders next time. When you have that big beast coming at you, what can you do? They were almost like robots," said Carson, who counted three good scoring chances for his team.

"The team didn't give up and we made them earn those nine goals." Quinte West scored their first two goals within the opening six minutes of the game and ended with two goals in the last five minutes.

The game was played under the lights of the Quinte home pitch, and to the surprise of Portland players and coaches, several Hercules military planes flew over low during the game on their way to a nearby landing strip.

Today, Thursday June 8, PFC plays host to Brockville at Kin Park on Harlem Road at 6:30 p.m. Earlier this season PFC won a friendly game against Brockville 2-1. Carson thinks the team has a much better shot against Brockville, because, "when those premier teams come from Kingston and area 'oh my God' watch out," he said.
