Portland soccer players selected to enter U20 World Cup field on Saturday

Emilia and Daniel Carson of Portland have been selected by FIFA [FŽdŽration Internationale de Football Association] to be captains for the Argentina-Czech Republic game of the U20 World Cup soccer championships in Ottawa on Saturday.

This means the siblings will enter the stadium hand-in-hand with the players just before the game, and they will be included in a five-hour build-up ceremony towards the kick off.

In conjunction with the official charity SOS Villages the selection was made and unveiled at an event on Sparks Street in Ottawa last weekend.

SOS Villages has been working hand in hand with FIFA for many years. They enable children in developing countries to have a safe environment to learn and play under the slogan It takes a village to raise a child.

The game will be broadcast on the CBC network, starting at 6:55 p.m. Daniel (six) drew a picture to enter, and Emilia (eight) wrote a 250-word essay.

They are the only kids outside of the Ottawa area who were chosen. Emilia is currently playing for the Portland Football Club in Portland and Daniel just wrapped up his second season in the North Leeds Minor Soccer Association.
