Although some think differently, Portland (in Ontario that is) is not clear on everybodyŐs radar screen yet. Take the Belleville Soccer Club for instance.

By game time, 6:30 p.m. last Thursday, only seven players had found Kin Park on Harlem Road for their match against the Portland Football Club (PFC).

"This is really in the middle of nowhere," a Belleville supporter could be overheard saying on the sideline.

At kick off, Belleville started with a striker in goal and six players on the pitch and to the amazement of the large crowd of local soccer fans, the visitors scored the opening goal. Throughout the first half Belleville players kept trickling in.

The starting goalie arrived and eventually the teams were at even strength, and strangely enough thatŐs when PFC picked up the pace.

"Everybody settled down. It was the first home game, and there were some nerves. We did come back, we almost won it, and we didnŐt fold under the pressure," said Carson.

Nathan Teixeira scored for PFC to tie the game in the second half. The final score was 1-1. PFC is made up of boys under the age of 16.

They compete in the East Region Soccer League. This week PFC visits Quinte West who lost their opening game against Kingston United 2-1.
