The Portland Football Club (PFC) U16 boys are halfway into their East Region Soccer League season and they are still waiting for their first win.

And, while the spirit of the team does not seem in jeopardy, coach Anders Carson recognizes it will take a special contribution to change the momentum.

So, on Thursday, at the PFC home game at Kin Park against Brockville, Carson made a promise to his players. "Score 10 goals in the next six games and I will shave my beard."

Not much later, David Waenink and Andrew DeKroon recorded markers, for a 2-2 halftime score, and even though PFC lost the game 4-2, the players now have something new to compete for.

Carson has shifted to a 4-3-3 system (four defenders, three midfielders and three attackers) to help his boys play forward-minded soccer.

"I liked the passing we did on Thursday, but there were a few more times that we were close and could have scored," said the whiskered leader. This week, PFC plays three games.

They are at home on Tuesday, on the road on Wednesday and back at Kin Park on Friday. All games start at 6:30 p.m. See next weekÕs The Review-Mirror for all results.

"I think something is going to happen this week. By the end of this week, there will be a win. I am almost ready to guarantee it," Carson said, "Although I am a little scared for the beard coming off.Õ

Correction Last week we showed a picture of the PFC U13 girls at Kin Park. The girls were at practice after their first win of the season, 1-0 over the Cataraqui Clippers. We wrote that it was goaltender Megan Magee who kept the Clippers from scoring, however, it was Emma Magee in net.
