On Sunday, the U14 girls of the Portland Football Club will be playing a Charity Soccer Game against prominent citizens from the Township of Rideau Lakes.
This will be a pass-the-hat event with the funds going towards the team in support of sending this young group of girls to represent Portland, the Rideau Lakes and Canada at the 2010 Dalecarlia Cup in Sweden.
Kick off for the game will be at 3 p.m. at Kin Park, on Harlem Road, across from the Legion #231 in Portland.
The Dalecarlia Cup is the largest tournament on grass in Scandinavia. The venue is situated three hours north of Sweden’s capital of Stockholm. PFC will be guaranteed four matches against international teams.
This Charity Game will enable the public to see the team first hand. To date they are in the middle of the second season of their existence and have showed a resilience to learn and play at a higher level.
They have attended clinics with the Ottawa Fury and a former Schalke 04 goalie from the German Bundesliga. The fan support has been incredible, as the ladies have shown grit and determination when playing other clubs.
Head Coach Scott Halladay is excited about the charity Game.
"You will get to see some of your favourite citizens play the beautiful game on the top notch field at Kin Park," said Halladay. “ There is nothing like a goal to motivate young players. Sweden is that goal and the girls are lining up to shoot," Halladay said.
"Come out and support your local team. Make our area proud of our youth. They are our future. Let’s give them a hand," said Halladay.
