More than 100 fans came to cheer on the Portland Football Club U14 girls as they took on a team of invited residents and businessmen in a charity game at Kin Park on Harlem Road on Sunday.
The girls defeated the guests, who’s team included mayor Ron Holman, NDP MP Paul Dewar and the Review-Mirror editor Howie Crichton, in a shoot out after a 4-4 tie in regulation time.
Thanks to donations from individuals and community groups such as Portland Outdoors, more than $350 was raised for the team to go towards their trip to the Dalecarlia Cup in Borlange, Sweden in 2010.
“I was really happy with the turn out,” said U14 coach Scott Halladay, who played alongside his girls against the guests. “And, the game was good as well. This really fired up the girls,” Halladay said.
And the boosts Halladay described carried on to the next day, when his team posted their biggest win of the season.
On Monday, PFC defeated Napanee 6-0. Siobhan Bell, Rachael Schliesmann, Jennifer Crosby (2), Michaela Halladay and Michelle Glover scored. The halftime score was 2-0.
The PFC U11 boys also played Napanee in their game last week. It had rained so much that most of the field turned into a puddle.
Napanee scored first on a corner kick that curved into the net. The teams were evenly matched and Michael Anson made that point clear when he scored the tying goal on a pass from Braiden Wing. The final score was 1-1 and the U11 boys have now scored points against each team in the division.
The U18 boys were close to causing a major upset in their East Region Soccer league cup game against the premier division U17 boys of the Cataraqui Clippers.
The boys of head coach Ryan Gardiner battled to a 1-0 loss after a 0-0 half time score. On Sunday, they lost 3-0 in a regular league game against St. Lawrence United.
