The Portland Football Club (P.F.C.) is half way to Sweden, from a fundraising point of view that is.

On Wednesday Dave Scotland, from Scotland Funeral Home in Elgin, presented a $1000 cheque to Anders Carson, head coach and manager of the P.F.C.

The club will use these funds in a continuing effort to bring it’s players to the Gothia Cup in July in Sweden.

“We are half way there,” said Carson commenting on the funds raised to date.

In his application for the grant Carson wrote: “The Portland Football Club will be one of the first rural teams from Canada to play at the Gothia Cup. We are going to make this area as visible as possible. Last year, there were 12 teams from Canada. Many of them were from major centers. We will be the first ever from this area.”

The Gothia Cup is the world’s largest and most international youth soccer tournament in the world.

“We had quite a few applications this year. I picked this one because it is for the kids in our community and to give them an opportunity I never had,” said Scotland.

“This is an opportunity of a life time for many of them and we have to look after our youth,” Scotland said.

Every year in January Scotland issues a grant to support people and organizations that are making a difference in the community.

Last year the grant went to the Rear of Leeds and Lansdowne Aid Centre Food bank to help develop a winter inventory.

On Valentines day the PFC will organize their next fundraising dance, called the Sweetheart Dance, at the Portland Community centre. Music is provided by DJs Thomas Nelson and Eric Larson. Tickets are available at the door. $10 for one or $15 for two.
