NEW!!! Non competitive cycling in Portland this summer!

On Wednesday June 14, Portland Outdoors is kicking off its first of four non competitive family cycling events in the months of June, July and August.
The routes will be on a combination of trails, county and country roads and vary in difficulty. On all dates, leaving at noon from the Portland Community Centre on Water Street, Chris Allan will take cyclist on the Newboyne Route.
Mountain bikes or hybrid bikes are recommended. Helmets are required and cyclists need to arrange their own water and snacks.

MAP ONE Newboyne Loop-Easy 45 minutes

Desc. This is a fun route best suited for novice riders that takes you on the Cataraqui trail and some small back country roads by churches, cemeteries, and through a wildlife preserve.

* From Portland follow Highway 15 to Portland Station Rd and turn right
* Follow Portland Station Rd to the Cataraqui Trail and Turn Left (note that this was the original site for the Portland Train station)
* Follow the trail until you have reached County Road 5.Turn right.(Note you will cross 2 roads before you come to County Road 5) This takes you to Newboyne the site of a beautiful red roof church and through a bird sanctuary.
* Follow County Road 5 until you reach Cedar Valley Road and turn right. Just past County Road 5 you will see a very small cemetery with a few stones.
* Follow Cedar Valley rd back to the Cataraqui Trail and turn left.
* Follow the Cataraqui Trail back to where you started.

NOTE: Feeling energetic? instead of turning right back to Station Road, keep going to Harlem Road and turn Right, this will bring you back to Highway 15. Cross the highway and you will see a small path which takes you to Robs Garage on the south end of town.

MAP TWO Forfar Loop-Easy 60 minutes (depending on how long you stop)

Desc.This is a fun route best suited for novice riders that takes you on the Cataraqui trail and some small back country roads through farms and by churches on the way to Forfar Dairy. Bring some money and buy some fresh cheese curds or treat yourself to a tasty ice cream cone.

* From Portland follow Highway 15 to Portland Station Rd and turn right
* Follow Portland Station Rd to the Cataraqui Trail and Turn right (note that this was the original site for the Portland Train station)
* Follow the trail across Harlem Road and Forfar Road until you reached County Road 42 where you will turn Right.
* Follow County Road 42 and turn left at the Stop sigh (Forfar Road). You are now in Forfar, enjoy the Dairy and check out Bakers Feed Store.
* Heading back now, follow Forfar road back towards Portland (north) until you reach Myers Road where you will turn left.
* Follow Myers road across Highway 15 (where in now becomes Big Rideau Lake Rd) to Cove Road and Turn Right.
* Follow Cove Road through the horse farm back to Highway 15, turn Left just before Highway 15 onto the small path,which takes you to Robs Garage on the south end of town.

MAP THREE Sheffield's Farm/Forfar Loop - Intermediate 2 hrs

Desc. This is a longer route best suited for intermediate riders that takes you on the Cataraqui trail and some small back country roads through farms and by churches on the way to Sheffield's and Forfar Dairy. Bring some money and buy some fresh strawberries and produce, fresh cheese curds or treat yourself to a tasty ice cream cone.

* From Portland follow Highway 15 to Portland Station Rd and turn right
* Follow Portland Station Rd to the Cataraqui Trail and turn Left (note that this was the original site for the Portland Train station)
* Follow the trail until you have reached County Road 5.Turn right.(Note you will cross 2 roads before you come to County Road 5) This takes you to Newboyne the site of a beautiful red roof church and through a bird sanctuary.
* Follow County Road 5 until you reach Groulx Road and turn right
* Follow Groulx Road to Thousand Acre Road and turn right
* Follow Thousand Acre Road to Sheffield's Farm which will be on the left. (Note. Sheffield's is a seasonal farm)
* Continuing on from Sheffield's in the same direction follow Thousand Acre Rd to Harlem Road and turn right.
* Follow Harlem Road to Portland/Settlement Road (this will be the first road on theft) turn left.
* Follow Portland Settlement Road to the fork in the road and stay to the right until you reach County Road 42.
* Follow County Road 42 and turn left at the Stop sigh (Forfar Road). You are now in Forfar, enjoy the Dairy and check out Bakers Feed Store.
* Heading back now, follow Forfar road back towards Portland (north) until you reach Myers Road where you will turn left.
* Follow Myers road across Highway 15 (where in now becomes Big Rideau Lake Rd) to Cove Road and Turn Right.
* Follow Cove Road through the horse farm back to Highway 15, turn Left just before Highway 15 onto the small path,which takes you to Robs Garage on the south end of town.

MAP FOUR Chaffey's Locks Trail Ride - Difficult 3 hours plus

Desc. This is not a difficult technical ride, however trail and back road riding limits the speed of the ride extending the time it takes to complete the journey. This ride takes you on the Cataraqui trail and some small back country roads through farms and by churches on the way to Chaffey's Locks. While in Chaffey's Locks take time to have a picnic either at the Locks, the beach, or at the Opinicon. (note some of these roads are gravel and when crossing they will not have road signs)

* From Portland follow Highway 15 to Portland Station Rd and turn right
* Follow Portland Station Rd to the Cataraqui Trail and Turn right (note that this was the original site for the Portland Train station)
* Follow the trail across Harlem Road, Forfar Road, Stone Rd,Charland Rd,Highway 15 (cross highway) to Little Lake Rd. Little lake is a great stop for a break and snack.
* Continue on trail across Chaffey's Lock Rd, Clear Lake Rd, Marina Rd, to Iron Bridge Ln (this is the last road before the Canal). This would be a good place to turn left down to Chaffey's Locks Rd. Once in town explore!

* To return head back up Iron Bridge Lane to the trail and turn right.
* Follow trail until Clear Lake Rd (the 2nd road) and turn left.
* Follow Clear Lake Rd to Crosby Rd . (Note. this road forks so watch the signs)
* Follow Crosby Rd to Highway 15 and turn left.
* Follow Highway 15 to County Rd 42 and turn right.
* Follow County Rd 42 to Forfar
* Follow Forfar road back towards Portland (straight through the Stop Sign)
* Follow Forfar road to Harlem Rd and turn left.
* Follow Harlem Rd which will bring you back to Highway 15. Cross the highway and you will see a small path which takes you to Robs Garage on the south end of town.
